Life
My name is Roman Šperka, Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Ing., Ph.D. I was born in 1977 in Valašské Meziříčí, Czech Republic. Shortly after my birth, my family moved to Čadca, Slovakia, where I started elementary school in 1984. In 1986, our family relocated to the village of Staškov – Polgrúň. Between 1992 and 1996, I attended the Grammar School in Turzovka.
After graduating from secondary school, I started my own business in the field of information technologies, focusing on the sale and servicing of computer equipment as well as the design and implementation of software solutions for business practice. I developed accounting software and point-of-sale systems using Delphi and Visual FoxPro. Later, I founded the construction company StavoTech – construction services. My practical business experience significantly influenced my further professional and research orientation towards the application of information technologies, process management, and intelligent systems in organizational management.
In 2004, I began my studies at the School of Business Administration in Karviná, Silesian University in Opava (OPF-CZ), where I successfully completed my Master’s degree in 2010 in the study programme Systems Engineering and Informatics, specializing in Managerial Informatics. Between 2010 and 2013, I continued my doctoral studies in the study programme Economics and Management, specializing in Business Economics and Management. In 2012, I successfully passed the state doctoral examination, and in 2013 I defended my doctoral dissertation entitled “The Use of Multi-Agent Systems for Business Process Modelling”, obtaining the Ph.D. degree.
In March 2017, I successfully completed my habilitation procedure in the field of Business Economics and Management at OPF-CZ. My habilitation thesis was entitled “Information Support for Business Process Management at the Operational Level”, and my habilitation lecture focused on “Business Process Simulations”. Effective from April 1, 2017, I was appointed Associate Professor.
In parallel with my studies in economics and management, I also expanded my expertise in informatics. In 2008, I started parallel studies at the Faculty of Science, University of Ostrava, in the study programme Informatics, specializing in Information Systems. I completed these studies successfully in 2011, obtaining the degree Master of Science. Subsequently, I completed a rigorous examination procedure at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Informatics, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, in the field of Applied Informatics. My rigorous thesis entitled “Multi-Agent Simulation of Financial Markets” was successfully defended in 2013, and I obtained the academic degree RNDr.
Since 2010, I have been actively involved in academic self-governance and university management. Between 2010 and 2013, I served as a member of the Student Chamber of the Academic Senate of Silesian University in Opava and the Academic Senate of OPF-CZ. Between 2013 and 2016, I served in the Employee Chamber of the Academic Senate of Silesian University in Opava.
In 2012, I joined the Department of Informatics at OPF-CZ as an assistant lecturer. Since September 1, 2015, I have been working at the Department of Business Economics and Management as Associate Professor and Head of Department. Between 2016 and 2023, I served as Vice-Dean for International Relations, and since March 1, 2023, I have been serving as Dean of the School of Business Administration in Karviná.
Between 2020 and 2024, I acted as guarantor of the Bachelor’s and follow-up Master’s study field Business Economics and Management, as well as the English-taught study field Business Economics and Management. Since 2021, I have been guarantor of the Bachelor’s and follow-up Master’s study programmes Economics and Management and the English-taught programme Economics and Management.
Since 2022, I have been a member of the Steering Committee of the STARS EU alliance, and since 2023 I have been one of the two principal coordinators of the European University project at Silesian University in Opava.
In my teaching and research activities, I focus on organizational management, digital transformation, and the application of intelligent information technologies in the management of companies and institutions. My research focuses on modelling, analysis, and management of business processes using the principles of Business Process Management (BPM), process mining, workflow management systems, robotic process aion (RPA), modelling and simulation, as well as modern approaches based on artificial intelligence and data analytics.
In teaching, I focus on business processes, information systems, modelling and simulation, managerial economics, and process and innovation management. My research integrates process management, information systems, process mining, agent-based simulations, and the digital transformation of organizations. I am also actively involved in the internationalization of higher education, management of international academic projects, and the development of interdisciplinary scientific cooperation.
I actively participate in both national and international academic environments as a member of scientific councils, steering boards, and programme committees of international scientific conferences.
In my professional and research activities, I integrate academic research, teaching, managerial practice, and international cooperation with a focus on intelligent organizational management, digital transformation, and the use of modern information technologies in organizational management.
